General Summary of Position:

The Department of Public Health, within the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences is seeking a part-time Program Director with expertise in health informatics, health services research, or health data science.  The Program Director also will be a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

The Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences prepares professionals and scientists in a wide range of health science fields. Its Department of Public Health offers a Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH), Master of Science in Health Information Management (MSHIM), Master of Public Health (MPH), and Doctor in Science (ScD) in Public Health. The department faculty are dedicated educators, experienced practitioners, and highly productive, federally funded investigators. The faculty are active in various areas of research including health informatics and service research, population health, policy/program evaluations, health promotion, aging, chronic disease management, infectious diseases, substance use prevention, health equity, epidemiology, omics, biostatistics, and big data analytics. The annual research expenditure (extramurally funded) exceeded $4.83 million in 2022-2023.

The position will focus on supporting and sustaining the Master of Science in Health Information Management (MSHIM), Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics (GCHI) programs, which are housed in the Department of Public Health.   

The MSHIM program is a professional graduate degree program that largely serves healthcare and Health Information Technology (HIT) professionals. The majority of the courses are taught online. The program has more than 100 part-time and full-time students, with about half pursuing the Health Informatics concentration and the other half pursuing the Healthcare Management concentration. Classes also serve students from Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP), MPH and ScD in Public Health programs in the college.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • A master’s degree required at the time of application
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Broad health informatics and other health industry management experience
  • "Hands on" experience with healthcare information systems (e.g., EMR, EHR, CPOE)
  • Knowledge and expertise on accreditation options in HIM
  • Experience in advising and mentoring graduate students

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience in teaching face to face and online
  • Evidence of ability to work with diverse student and faculty populations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working with the Chair and Associate chair, coordinate MSHIM faculty teaching assignments and course schedule(s).
  • Oversee and coordinate the accredited MSHIM program and ensure a rigorous and cutting-edge curriculum.
  • Maintain the CAHIIM Accreditation.
  • Initiate curriculum changes and other academic processes as needed.
  • Maintain university catalog, website, and marketing information related to HIM program.
  • Facilitate meetings and maintain documentation for: a) MSHIM Advisory Committee (bi-annual), b) Adjunct faculty (monthly) and c) Student Networking Events (monthly).
  • Participate in student recruitment activities through UML as well as professional associations.
  • Answer inquiries for those interested in learning more about the program and provide guidance during the application process.
  • Review and approve student applications for admissions as appropriate.
  • Verify and approve student applications for degree and certificate completion.
  • Mentoring and providing certification exam guidance to students.
  • Other appropriate service duties assigned by the department chair and the Dean.
  • Teaching courses in the MSHIM and MPH program (optional, teaching will be compensated additionally).
